2- The energy efficiency should be measured by the users permanently
The energy efficiency of a compressed air installation is the most debated argument when compressor manufacturers sell an Air-Compressor or Compressed Air installation. The reason is quite simple because 80% of the cost for compressed air during a period of 5 years is the Energy cost or Electricity bill.
All manufacturers will proof that their Air-compressor is the most efficient and your cost, when choosing for them, will be the lowest. Once the installation is installed, often it is very difficult to define, whether the claimed performance is reached yes or no.
The reason why it is difficult to define is :
- compressor manufacturers will use all kind of parameters (ambient temperatures, humidity, altitude,....) to make the calculation to proof that they are within the tolerances
- the ISO 1217 allows to implement important tolerances on flow and power.
- after installation, the installation of measurement equipment is often difficult
-...
Therefor my recommendation is always, to do the measurement yourself.
When you will measure, a difference will appear between the promised performance and the real performance.
The next argument by the manufacturer will be that the measurement device is not good and not correctly calibrated.
If you measure a difference of 20% on flow, you might be wrong for a couple of percentage, but not 20%.
The benefit of using your own measurement system, is that you can measure accurately (use specialised companies to help). On top, you will visualize the behaviour over time of your installation. The flow often deteriorates after 1000 hrs running due to wear and erosion. This is depending on the type of Air-compressor you have installed.
Today in every car you buy, the fuel consumption is being displayed in L/100km or Miles/Gallon.
What gets measured gets managed !
